General BPL

How does IBEC's BPL service work?

IBEC's BPL solution utilizes the existing power lines to bring the signal into your home or business. The cooperative installs our BPL equipment on their electric poles and the signal runs along the medium voltage lines. At a customers home or business the signal is moved to the low voltage line that connects to you. Once you have signed up for service you connect your BPL Modem to your computer or wireless router with an Ethernet cable. Virtually any outlet in your home or business now becomes a port.

Can I sign up for IBEC's Internet service?

IBEC has begun deploying its BPL solution with several Rural Cooperative partners. You will be contacted by your Rural Electric Cooperative as we begin to deploy in your area.

Do I have to change the wiring in my home or business?

No! IBEC's BPL solution works with the existing wiring in your home or business and virtually any outlet becomes a port.

Will IBEC's BPL affect my electric service?

No! IBEC's BPL solution does not affect the flow or consumption of electricity in any way.

Will there be any change on my electric bill?

Yes! You will be billed for your IBEC BPL service in advance on your monthly electric bill. This change will have no effect on your electric use or charges.

Can I keep my personal e-mail account and use IBEC's BPL service?

Yes, you can keep your personal e-mail account. IBEC Customer Service Representatives may be limited in their ability to troubleshoot non-IBEC e-mail addresses.

Does IBEC offer Internet security features with its BPL solution?

IBEC provides free virus and spam filtering on inbound email utilizing the latest antispam and antivirus technologies. We also recommend the following free utilities for personal virus protection:

We also recommend LST's Network Management Services for 24-hour system monitoring, existing virus software updates, weekly Windows updates, and many other administrative tasks. Network Management Services is designed to keep your network protect from the inside and out.

Does my IBEC BPL support VoIP services?

Yes, BPL should support VoIP services. However, IBEC Customer Service cannot troubleshoot VoIP products or services.

Is IBEC BPL VPN compatible?

Yes. IBEC's service is compatible with VPN tunnels, however, these are not supported by technical support.

Does IBEC offer a wireless option?

With the use of a wireless router or access point, you can create a wireless network in your home or business.

Will my computer work with IBEC's BPL solution?

The only requirement for connection to IBEC's BPL Network is an Ethernet port configured to obtain an IP Address automatically (DHCP). However, in the case of a problem, IBEC's Customer Support Staff is trained to provide support for the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, and Vista
  • Mac OS 8.6 through 9.2.2
  • Mac OS X 10.1 and higher

Other configurations should work and our customer support staff can attempt to provide configuration advice, however these configurations are not officially supported. These configurations include:

  • Linux-based Computers and other Operating Systems
  • Routers, Wireless Access Points, and Apple Airports
  • Game Consoles, Printers, etc.

What do I do if my computer does not have an Ethernet port?

Please refer to a local computer store.

How Can I Contact Customer Support?

Installing IBEC's BPL solution

To install IBEC's BPL service, plug your BPL Modem in to a power outlet and connect the BPL Modem to your router (WAN port) or computer with an ethernet cable. After your BPL Modem is plugged in, call 1-888-IBEC-BPL and a Customer Service Representative will walk you through the steps to complete your setup.

What happens if I lose power?

If you should loose power your connection to IBEC's BPL service will be lost. The BPL Modem will reconnect once the power is restored.

How do I turn on my BPL Modem?

There is no on/off switch on the BPL Modem. Just plug it in and a status light will indicate that it is powered.

I forgot my username and Password. What do I do?

As an IBEC BPL customer, you may register up to 5 email addresses for free. The first will be your primary address and will function not only as a normal email account but also as your login for our backup dialup service. The remaining four will function only as email accounts and will not allow you to connect to our backup dialup service. Your primary Ibec BPL e-mail address and backup dialup account information will be created to your specifications the first time you call in to activate your BPL service. Any secondary addresses may be setup at your descretion. If you have not yet created an Ibec BPL e-mail address or would like to create an additional secondary account, please call 1-888-IBEC-BPL.

Username - Your "username" will always be your entire e-mail address.
Password - For your protection and privacy, we do not give out e-mail or login passwords via our technical support line or e-mail. To reset your password, please call 1-888-IBEC-BPL.

How do I change my password?

You can change the password to any of your 5 e-mail accounts by calling 1-888-IBEC-BPL and verifying your identity, then providing the Custom Service Representative with a new password.

How do I access my web mail account?

IBEC webmail allows you to access your IBEC BPL e-mail accounts from any Internet connection. You can access webmail features by logging in with your full e-mail address and password. There are 2 forms of webmail:

  • Webmail Express allows you send e-mail as well as access any e-mail which is actively being stored on our mail server through a simple and easy to use interface.
  • Webmail Classic offers you many of the same features normally found in Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook. Not only can you perform basic e-mail functions but you will also be able to create folders, organize messages, create calendar events and store contact information in your address book.

How do I configure my email software?

IBEC Customer Service can walk you through the process of configuring mail clients. Please contact a Customer Service Representative at 1-888-IBEC-BPL.

Advanced users may wish to configure their e-mail client themselves. To do this, you will need the following information:

The mail servers (incoming and outgoing POP3) are both mail.bpl.coop and use the default ports (25 for incoming, 110 for outgoing). For the username, please use your full IBEC e-mail address (ie: example@bpl.coop). Also, be sure to check "My server requires authentication."

How do I create additional email accounts?

As an IBEC BPL customer, you are allowed to 5 e-mail addresses free of charge. To have these addresses created, or to be walked through setting up an address on your computer, call 1-888-IBEC-BPL.

Additional or stand-alone e-mail accounts may also be purchased. For details, contact IBEC Customer Service.

If I wish to change my service package what do I do?

If you should choose to change your BPL service to a higher or lower speed please contact Customer Support at 1-888-IBEC-BPL.

How do I install a Wireless Router?

To install a wireless router, follow the configuration instructions included with the router. Once the router software and hardware are successfully installed, contact Customer Service at 1-888-IBEC-BPL to be walked through the setup finalization.

How do I setup my Personal Webspace

Each IBEC customer may receive 20 megabytes of free webspace. To sign up for this space, please e-mail webmaster@ibec.net or call Customer Service at 1-888-IBEC-BPL.

What do I do if my service is slow or I can't connect to the Internet?

If you are using a power strip, surge protector or extension cord please try plugging the BPL Modem directly into the wall outlet. Unplug your BPL Modem for 1 minute and plug it back in. Make sure that the BPL Modem is plugged in securely. You may try plugging your modem in to an alternate outlet. Please try to avoid using the BPL Modem in an outlet that has a noisy device plugged in to it, such as a cell phone charger or a large appliance. If these solutions do not work please contact our Customer Support staff at 1-888-IBEC-BPL.

What should I do if I am moving?

Please contact Customer Support if you are moving (1-888-423-2275). We will be able to let you know if our BPL solution is available in your new location.
